What is the IRAC Method?
IRAC is an acronym for Issue, Rule, Application, and Conclusion. It is the universal standard for legal analysis across common law jurisdictions, utilized by judges drafting rulings, advocates preparing briefs, and top-tier law students answering examination questions.
Deconstructing the 4 Elements of IRAC
### 1. Issue (Identify the Legal Dispute)
Frame the legal issue as a precise question of law rather than a factual summary.
- Poor: "A hit B with a stick."
- Professional IRAC: "Whether A's act of inflicting a single head blow during a sudden quarrel constitutes Murder under Section 103 BNS or Culpable Homicide not amounting to Murder under Exception 4 to Section 105 BNS?"
### 2. Rule (State the Statutory and Case Law Authority)
Quote the operative statute section, its elements, and the governing Supreme Court ratio (K.M. Nanavati v. State of Maharashtra or Virsa Singh v. State of Punjab).
### 3. Application (Synthesize Law with Facts)
This is where 60% of your marks reside. Analyze whether each ingredient of the Rule is satisfied by the facts provided.
### 4. Conclusion (Deliver the Verdict)
State the outcome clearly in 2-3 sentences based strictly on the analysis conducted in the Application section.
