The Challenge of Legal Research for Law Students
With over 70 years of Supreme Court jurisprudence and millions of reported rulings, typing a generic search term into Google often yields outdated or contradictory blog posts. Law students need a structured research workflow.
The 4-Step Legal Research Workflow
### Step 1: The Bare Act Footnote Reconnaissance
Before searching digital databases, open a standard commentary Bare Act. Below the section text, review the case footnotes to identify the original foundational rulings (e.g., Carlill v. Carbolic Smoke Ball under Section 8 Contract Act).
### Step 2: Supreme Court e-SCR & Neutral Citation Search
Use the official Supreme Court e-SCR portal. Filter by:
- Subject matter / Act Name (e.g., Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023).
- Operative Section.
- Bench Strength (Constitution Bench vs Division Bench).
### Step 3: Check Subsequent Treatment
Always verify whether the ruling was:
- Affirmed: Followed and strengthened by subsequent benches.
- Distinguished: Restricted to its specific facts.
- Overruled: Declared invalid by a larger constitutional bench.
### Step 4: LowStudy Curated Case Hub
Use LowStudy dedicated case-laws hub where cases are already categorized by Gujarat University syllabus topics and stripped down to 4-line exam briefs.
